NIMET warns farmers against early planting due to ‘deceptive’ February rains
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency warns farmers in Oyo State against early planting due to misleading rainfall patterns.
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) has issued a warning to farmers in Oyo State, advising them to avoid early planting of crops due to recent rainfall being described as 'deceptive.' This warning was articulated by the Oyo State Meteorological Manager, Mr. Emmanuel Udoh, during a dissemination program for the 2026 weather forecast. He stressed that farmers should anticipate the actual onset of rain, which is expected to start between April 15 and the end of that month.
Udoh explained that the correct timing for planting coincides with when the soil moisture content reaches 50 percent, a threshold that promotes adequate nutrition and growth for crops. This information is vital for farmers as planting too early could lead to a shortage of water during critical growth phases, potentially resulting in crop failure and economic losses. Hence, adhering to the meteorological advice is essential for ensuring a successful agricultural season.
In the broader context, the NIMET’s advisory underscores the importance of timely and accurate weather forecasting in supporting agricultural practices and food security in Nigeria. Farmers are encouraged to listen to these warning messages, adjust their planting schedules accordingly, and utilize more precise agricultural practices in response to changing climatic conditions, which have been increasingly unpredictable in recent years.
