Condominium and school flooded: heavy rain causes damage in Planaltina, DF
Severe rainfall in the Federal District led to flooding in both a condominium and a school in Planaltina, prompting emergency services to evacuate residents.
On Monday, January 16, a strong storm struck the Federal District in Brazil, causing significant flooding in Planaltina, particularly affecting a condominium and a local school. The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) had predicted more rain leading up to the weekend, warning residents of continuing weather disruptions and potential hazards. The forecast indicated temperatures ranging from 19°C to 27°C, with severe weather alerts issued for the following days.
The flooding primarily affected the Sarandi condominium, where streets were inundated, necessitating intervention from the firefighters who undertook rescue operations for residents in perilous situations. The condominium's proximity to the São Bartolomeu River made it particularly vulnerable to flooding, especially since it had experienced similar conditions before, where residents had to be rescued by boat during a previous incident in early 2025.
Additionally, the Escola Classe 15 also faced flooding, with teachers capturing the moment as the school was overwhelmed by water. As rains are expected to continue, the situation has raised concerns about infrastructure resilience against future storms and the safety of residents in flood-prone areas, highlighting the need for improvement in disaster preparedness and response in the region.
