Compensation of nearly 20,000 euros paid for a vehicle damaged in a parking lot
A significant increase in parking lot vehicle damage claims has been reported in Latvia, with one compensation amounting to nearly 20,000 euros for a collision while exiting a parking space.
In Latvia, the number of KASKO insurance claims related to vehicle damage in parking lots has increased by 22% over the past year, according to data from BTA Baltic Insurance Company. This statistic highlights a growing trend where many drivers are facing accidents in areas they typically consider safe, such as parking lots next to shopping centers, offices, and residential buildings.
The largest compensation thus far has been recorded at 18,392 euros for an incident where a vehicle sustained damage to its entire left side after colliding with another car while exiting a parking space. Ivo Danฤe, director of the BTA Insurance Compensation Department, noted that drivers often associate accident risks with highways and intersections, but in practice, many incidents occur in parking areas where space and maneuverability are limited, and traffic is often high.
Common occurrences of damage are associated with vehicles moving in reverse or exiting parking spaces, where drivers may not see another vehicle or an obstruction in their path. This indicates a need for greater awareness and caution among drivers in these spaces, which seem deceptively safe but can lead to costly accidents if not navigated carefully.
