Helsinki car in parking garage destroyed – Owner living abroad demands 5,500 euros in compensation

A Helsinki resident's car, parked for four months in a private parking garage, was destroyed, leading the owner to demand 5,500 euros in compensation from the city.

In a unique case in Helsinki, the city is facing a compensation claim from the owner of a car that was destroyed after being left in a private parking garage for four months. The car owner, currently residing abroad, is requesting 5,500 euros, along with interest for the delays caused by the situation. The circumstances surrounding the incident began in early 2022 when the vehicle was parked at a private paid parking facility on Porkkalankatu in the Ruoholahti area of Helsinki.

According to the parking enforcement investigation, the car remained stationary in the garage for a significant period, leading to actions being taken by the facility's representatives. At the end of May 2022, the representatives requested assistance from the city for the removal of the vehicle, which had not been collected by the owner despite a warning notice being left on it. The city parking enforcement agency provided the owner an additional month to move the car before it was ultimately declared for destruction.

As the process unfolded, the car was eventually moved to a crushing facility after the owner's lack of response. The current demand for compensation raises questions around the responsibilities of both the vehicle owner and the parking facility, as well as the implications of such cases for municipal policies regarding abandoned vehicles. This incident highlights the complex nature of vehicle ownership and the financial disputes that can arise when laws and personal responsibilities collide.
