Insurers: Compensation Payments for Cars Damaged by Potholes Are Increasing Each Year

Insurers in Latvia report a growing trend in compensation payments for car damages caused by potholes, attributed to the rise in vehicles covered by KASKO insurance.

In Latvia, insurers have noted a significant increase in the compensation payments made for vehicles damaged by potholes each year. This trend suggests not only that more motorists are experiencing damage from road conditions but also that an increasing number of vehicles are insured under KASKO, a voluntary insurance coverage. As awareness among vehicle owners grows regarding their rights to claim compensation, the number of reported cases has also risen, indicating a societal shift towards taking proactive measures against road-related damages.

Around 2000 cases are reported annually where insurers issue compensations for damages caused by poor road surfaces, with a notable spike in claims occurring during the months of March and April. This seasonal trend highlights the urgency of addressing road maintenance, particularly following winter conditions when potholes become more prevalent. The increase in claims points to a broader concern regarding the quality of roads in Latvia, especially in urban areas like Riga where drivers frequently encounter hazardous potholes.

City officials, such as Ieva Grīsle from the Riga municipality’s External Communication Department, emphasize that while potholes are repaired throughout the year, the focus during winter is predominantly on the most dangerous ones. As the weather conditions prevent extensive repairs, this selective approach may leave many potholes unaddressed, exacerbating the situation. The discussion around road safety and quality continues to gain traction, prompting calls for improved infrastructure and timely repairs to reduce vehicular damage and enhance public safety.
