A company in Jyväskylä prints 100,000 postcards a day, even as Finns send them less frequently
Despite a significant decline in postcard sending in Finland, a printing company in Jyväskylä continues to produce a staggering 100,000 postcards daily.
In Jyväskylä, the printing company Kariteam operates at a remarkable capacity, printing nearly 100,000 postcards every weekday. With an annual output of approximately 30 million postcards, this translates to about five postcards for each Finnish citizen. This success, however, contrasts sharply with the declining trend in postcard sending among Finns, which has diminished by about 75% over the last decade.
Sami Määttä, who oversees domestic consumer postal services, notes that while there has been a considerable drop in mail volume, the Christmas card has managed to retain its popularity among Finns. Despite the overall decline in postcard sending, the Christmas card remains a cherished tradition, with nearly 9 million Christmas cards sent last year. This is a decline from over 10 million the previous year and 12 million two years ago, indicating changing habits among the population regarding greeting card communications.
The persistence of Kariteam as a leading postcard producer reflects a unique niche in the Finnish market. While technology and communication methods evolve, leading to reduced postcard usage, the demand for vibrant and diverse postcard designs continues to sustain the company's operations. The contrast between production and consumption highlights an interesting dynamic within Finland's postal culture, where the act of sending postcards is becoming less common, but the appreciation for their visual appeal remains strong.
