On April 14, a significant change will come into effect in Finland, making digital mail the primary method for official correspondence. This alteration will impact approximately 1.8 million Finns who currently receive official mail in paper form, despite their previous electronic interactions with authorities. After mid-April, these individuals will be directed to use the Suomi.fi digital mailbox when dealing with government services electronically. According to Annette Hotari, project manager at the Digital and Population Data Services Agency (DVV), separate consent for this transition will no longer be required.
Citizens utilizing any government service will be prompted to create a Suomi.fi digital mailbox, which involves entering and confirming an email address. The DVV is also encouraging users to download the associated application to facilitate this process. Users who have previously undergone secure identification will only need to provide a PIN code or biometric identification for subsequent access to their digital mail. Conversely, around 2.6 million Finns already using the Suomi.fi messaging system will not face any changes as a result of this update, allowing them to continue receiving their official notifications through this established platform with no disruptions.
