Ministry of Interior: 50 million euros to municipalities and their associations for fire protection

The Ministry of Interior in Greece is allocating 50 million euros to municipalities for fire protection initiatives in 2026, marking an increase of 10 million euros from the previous year.

The Greek Ministry of Interior has announced a funding allocation of 50 million euros for fire protection actions in 2026, which represents a 25% increase of 10 million euros compared to 2024. This funding will be distributed among the 332 municipalities across the country, with 47.5 million euros directed to the municipalities and an additional 2.5 million euros allocated to municipal associations. The decision, signed by Minister Theodoros Livanios, aims to support municipalities in implementing measures to prevent and mitigate fire risks.

The municipalities are expected to utilize these funds for a variety of fire protection initiatives, including proactive vegetation clearing in areas that require special protection such as parks, forests, and campsites. Additional activities supported by the funding include the removal of vegetation debris from properties owned or leased by citizens, thereby ensuring compliance with approved urban plans. This initiative is crucial, particularly in light of increasing wildfire risks in Greece, driven by climate change and a history of devastating fires in the region.

This funding initiative underscores the government's commitment to enhancing fire safety in vulnerable areas and supporting local authorities in their firefighting efforts. With the rise in frequency and intensity of wildfires in Greece, effective resource allocation for fire prevention and response will be essential for safeguarding communities and natural habitats from future threats. The proactive measures funded by this initiative are aimed at reducing fire incidence and enhancing the overall resilience of municipalities against the backdrop of a changing climate.
