Surprise twist: The Korkeasaari ferry returns to the water – here is the route
The Vispilä paddle steamer will resume services next summer, offering scenic cruises from Helsinki to Korkeasaari.
The Vispilä paddle steamer is set to return to service next summer, revitalizing transport options between Helsinki and Korkeasaari. Starting from early June, the ferry will conduct hourly sightseeing cruises, departing from the Helsinki Market Square three times a day and concluding at Korkeasaari. Passengers will have the opportunity to enjoy views of landmark sites such as the fortress of Suomenlinna and icebreakers, with zoo admission included in the ticket price.
The return of Vispilä comes as a surprise, particularly after last summer’s announcements that the ferry's longstanding operations connecting the Market Square and Korkeasaari were to cease. Initially, it was planned that access to Korkeasaari would only be possible from the northern shore via the Finkensilta bridge, especially after the ongoing works of Kruunusillat. However, the reinstatement of services seems to reflect a positive adjustment to the changing transportation landscape.
Originally built in 1993 specifically for the Korkeasaari route, the Vispilä has a long history with the community. This revival signifies not only a boost for local tourism but also ensures that this scenic and cultural connection remains accessible to both residents and visitors, drawn to enjoy the natural beauty and attractions of the island.
