Regula returns to the Kuivastu-Virtsu line after a long detour

The ferry Regula will return to service on the Kuivastu-Virtsu line after making a detour around Hiiumaa and Saaremaa to avoid damaging self-formed ice roads.

The ferry Regula is set to resume operations on the Kuivastu-Virtsu line, but its return will come via a longer route around the islands of Hiiumaa and Saaremaa. This detour is necessary to prevent damage to the ice roads that have formed naturally due to the cold weather conditions, as confirmed by Indrek Randveer, the head of TS Laevad, the company operating the ferries.

As normal ferry traffic is expected to return between Hiiumaa and the mainland by the end of the week, the operational changes reflect the challenges posed by the current winter weather. The ferry Leiger will also return to the line after undergoing dock repairs, further restoring regular connectivity between the islands and the mainland.

The situation highlights the logistical complexities of maintaining ferry services in Estonia, particularly during winter months when ice can affect navigation routes. Authorities and ferry operators need to adapt their plans swiftly to ensure safe passage for passengers and vehicles, thus ensuring that islanders are not isolated during harsh weather conditions.
