NRC confirms 26 injured in Abuja–Kaduna train collision

The Nigerian Railway Corporation has confirmed that a train collision along the Abuja–Kaduna corridor resulted in 26 injuries among passengers and crew.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has reported a train collision that occurred along the Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor on Monday, resulting in 26 individuals, including both passengers and crew members, sustaining various injuries. The incident took place near Asham Station at approximately 9:16 a.m., following a loud bang that was heard as part of the train formation collided with one another.

Managing Director of NRC, Kayode Opeifa, detailed that the Kaduna–Abuja service (KA-2) had departed Rigassa Station earlier that morning at 7:15 a.m. and subsequently arrived at Jere Station on time. However, as the train departed Jere Station just after 8:59 a.m., it was noted that the train experienced a minor delay due to operational adjustments involving the coupling of a locomotive.

The collision occurred while the train was approaching Asham Station, specifically between kilometer points 50 and 51. Preliminary investigations indicate that the collision involved the power car and the trailing locomotive crashing into one of the train's coaches. This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding safety and operational procedures within Nigeria's railway system, prompting calls for a review of protocols to prevent such occurrences in the future.
