NSIB probes Abuja-bound train collision
The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau is investigating a train collision that injured passengers on a route from Kaduna to Abuja.
The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has initiated a probe into a recent railway collision involving a passenger train on the Rigasa–Idu route. The incident, which occurred around 09:16 hours near Asham Station, resulted in several injuries among passengers. The NSIB's statement, issued by Funke Arowojobe, emphasized the importance of the investigation to determine the causes of the accident and outline necessary safety measures to prevent future occurrences.
The train involved, known as KA2, had embarked on its scheduled journey from Rigasa Railway Station in Kaduna. Operating within its standard service window from 07:15 to 10:01, the train made a scheduled stop at Jere Station, leaving shortly after to continue its journey to Abuja. The NSIB indicated that the incident happened on a downhill track section, which could potentially have played a role in the series of events that led to the collision, although thorough investigation findings are awaited.
This investigation highlights ongoing concerns regarding railway safety in Nigeria, where incidents involving passenger trains have occurred in the past. The findings from the NSIB's inquiry will not only impact immediate safety protocols for railway operations but could also lead to broader discussions about infrastructure investment and regulatory oversight within the Nigerian railway system, ensuring more secure travel for passengers in the future.
