Prefecture informs about termination of agreement with Ministry for the construction of sections 4 and 5 of the Fifth Bridge

The Guayas Prefecture is ending its agreement with the Ministry of Infrastructure regarding the construction of sections 4 and 5 of the Fifth Bridge due to lack of progress.

The Guayas Prefecture has announced the termination of its construction agreement with the Ministry of Infrastructure for the Fourth and Fifth sections of the Fifth Bridge, also known as the Viaducto Sur. The prefect, Marcela Aguiñaga, confirmed this decision and highlighted that there have been significant concerns raised by the ministry regarding the project's lack of progress. According to Minister Roberto Luque, the project 'is not going anywhere' and the terms of the agreement have not been met satisfactorily.

Sections 4 and 5 of the project involve key road connections linking Durán-Boliche and Durán-Tambo, as well as Taura with the route to Machala. The contract, originally signed in 2024, included a total investment of $120 million, with an initial advance payment of $35 million. Subsequent disbursements were to be made based on project progress, which has been insufficient as reported by Luque on Radio Centro, revealing that only 23.5% and 27% completion rates for the various access roads have been recorded.

This termination raises critical implications for infrastructure development in the region, affecting connectivity and economic growth linked to these transportation projects. The lack of advancement and resources allocated suggests the need for a reassessment of project management and oversight processes. Authorities and stakeholders will need to explore alternative solutions to ensure that critical infrastructure developments are not hindered in the future, ensuring community needs are met efficiently and effectively.
