SiO increases rent after cuts in electricity support

SiO, the student welfare organization in Oslo and Akershus, is raising rent by 1.8% due to the removal of electricity support for student housing.

SiO, the student welfare organization in Oslo and Akershus, has announced a 1.8% increase in rent effective August 1. This increase comes as a direct consequence of the removal of electricity support that student housing previously received. Andreas Eskelund, the managing director of SiO, highlighted the stark difference in electricity pricing faced by students in accommodations compared to others, underscoring the financial strain this places on students living in communal housing.

The Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (RME) has determined that student housing organizations are no longer entitled to the same electricity support that regular housing companies receive, compelling them to rely on compensation through the household scheme, which caps support at 500 kWh per month. This change took effect on December 1, further exacerbating the financial pressures on students as they grapple with rising living costs in Norway.

Additionally, the RME is contemplating whether student welfare organizations need to reimburse 95 million kroner in improperly disbursed electricity support funds. Politicians such as Lars Haltbrekken and Sunniva Holmås Eidsvoll from the Socialist Left Party (SV) are advocating for a parliamentary proposal to include student housing under the collective electricity consumption measurement to ensure they receive adequate support moving forward.
