Police reinforce security in Vargem Grande after a violent weekend with clashes between factions
The Civil Police of Maranhão is investigating gun attacks related to criminal organizations in Vargem Grande following a violent weekend that left one man injured.
The Civil Police of Maranhão (PC-MA) has launched an investigation into a series of gunfire attacks that occurred over the weekend in Vargem Grande, located about 172 km from São Luís. The police report that these incidents are linked to violent disputes between criminal organizations vying for control of drug trafficking in the region. One unidentified man was shot and is currently hospitalized in grave condition.
On Sunday, July 15, assailants entered a barbershop and opened fire, striking the victim in the face and chest. Emergency services were able to transport him to a hospital in São Luís where he is receiving treatment. These violent outbreaks have raised serious concerns regarding public safety in Vargem Grande, with local police emphasizing that the majority of these attacks are indeed connected to organized crime.
In response to the escalating violence, the State Integrated Public Security Force (FEISP) has been deployed to enhance police presence in Vargem Grande. Additionally, the Maranhão Military Police (PM-MA) initiated an operation aimed at restoring security and ensuring community safety amidst rising tensions and fears of further violent incidents linked to the ongoing conflict between rival factions.
