ECU911 launches free app Botón Violeta to protect women victims of violence

The ECU911 has introduced a new free app named Botón Violeta aimed at supporting women who are victims of violence in Ecuador.

ECU911 has launched a free application called Botón Violeta to aid women victims of violence across Ecuador. This app was designed to function nationally, even in circumstances where the victim lacks mobile data. With a simple press of a button, victims can send an immediate alert for help, which is then communicated to the police for swift response.

The app was unveiled by Juan Carlos Paladines, the director of ECU911, who highlighted alarming statistics regarding domestic violence in the country. Between 2025 and 2026, the agency coordinated responses to over 85,130 emergency calls related to domestic violence, highlighting the critical need for more effective support for women facing physical, psychological, or sexual aggression.

Botón Violeta enables victims to alert authorities directly, improving the chances of timely assistance. If victims opt to enter their phone number, the system can match and locate them more effectively. Importantly, the app is designed to work even if the mobile device has malfunctioned, ensuring safety and accessibility for all users. This innovative approach reflects a growing acknowledgment of the need for specialized tools to combat violence against women in Ecuador.
