The builder will have to rectify the visible deficiencies on the Mūkusalas Street promenade in Riga

Riga city officials have identified deficiencies in the Mūkusalas Street promenade and are monitoring the structure for safety following concerns about its integrity after the winter.

Officials from Riga have conducted an inspection of the Mūkusalas Street promenade and determined that while the fencing between the promenade and the river is stable, there are two significant defects in the construction that need addressing. Currently, the promenade is open to the public, but there are plans to monitor its safety closely, especially to see if the railings start to wobble. It was unanimously agreed by the project stakeholders, including the Riga City Council and the construction company, that after the first winter, substantial structural failures like crumbling concrete should not occur.

Martins Slimbahs, head of the Public Infrastructure Development Division of the Riga City Council, acknowledged that there are two types of defects present: one is a new issue related to possible crumbling of the railings and other elements, and the other involves pre-existing problems that should have been spotted earlier. The city is taking these issues seriously, emphasizing that such defects should not be evident after the winter season. The assurances provided by the construction oversight firm, Geo Consultants, have so far been vague, as they declined to comment on the situation when approached by the media.

The Riga City Council has noted that the project comes with a five-year guarantee, which places the onus on the builders to rectify these deficiencies without significant expense to taxpayers. As the city continues to promote the promenade as a public space for leisure and outdoor activities, they are under pressure to ensure that safety and construction standards are maintained effectively to prevent any potential hazards in the future.
