ZZS Skeptical about the Plan to Transfer Quick Loan Supervision to the Bank of Latvia

The Union of Greens and Farmers (ZZS) expresses skepticism about the proposal to transfer the supervision of non-bank lenders to the Bank of Latvia, unlike other coalition partners.

The Union of Greens and Farmers (ZZS) voiced its skepticism concerning the initiative proposed by Finance Minister Arvils AΕ‘eradens from the 'New Unity' party to transfer the licensing and oversight of non-bank lenders, particularly 'quick loan' providers, to the Bank of Latvia. ZZS chairman of the Saeima faction, Harijs Rokpelnis, indicated that the party remains cautious about this proposal, emphasizing that the Consumer Rights Protection Center (PTAC) has effectively monitored the industry and responded to consumer complaints in recent years.

Rokpelnis also pointed out that while the Bank of Latvia has made improvements in reducing bureaucratic procedures related to bank oversight in the last two years, the sector is still over-regulated under the Bank's governance. This raises concerns that the push for less bureaucracy may inadvertently lead to increased documentation requirements for businesses, thus complicating their operations further. The ZZS fears that the transition might not only hamper efficiency but could also alienate potential lenders who currently operate under a more manageable regulatory framework.

In contrast, the 'New Unity' party announced their intention to strengthen regulatory oversight, indicating the differences in strategies among coalition members. The debate highlights significant tensions over financial regulation in Latvia, with implications that could affect both consumers and businesses, potentially leading to a restructuring of the quick loan market in the country as parties vie for influence over financial governance.
