ZZS calls to expand support for households due to high heating bills
The Green and Farmers' Union (ZZS) in Latvia is urging the government to provide targeted support to households facing significantly higher heating and electricity costs this winter.
The Green and Farmers' Union (ZZS), currently part of Latvia's ruling coalition, is advocating for the government to take immediate action to assist households struggling with soaring heating and electricity expenses during the cold winter months. According to statements released by the ZZS, costs may rise by as much as 60% compared to previous years. They hold the politicians from 'New Unity' (JV), including Prime Minister Evika Siliņa, responsible for addressing the issue after Siliņa declared at the end of January that there is no energy crisis affecting the country. This stance has incited criticism from the ZZS, who believe there is a pressing need for concrete solutions for high utility bills.
The ZZS has issued a formal statement expressing its expectations for the government to support the proposals made by Welfare Minister Reiņš Uzulnieks (ZZS). These proposals were discussed in a coalition meeting earlier in the week and entail implementing changes that would provide financial relief from January to the end of April. Further collaboration is expected to take place between the ZZS, the Ministry of Welfare, and other relevant governmental bodies, including the Ministry of Economy, to ensure effective measures are enacted to support the affected households.
As the winter progresses and temperatures drop, the pressure on households from exorbitant heating bills heightens. The ZZS's push for government action is not only a response to immediate financial concerns but reflects broader issues of energy policy and social welfare in Latvia. The ongoing discourse around household support indicates that energy prices remain a contentious issue within the coalition government, and it will be crucial for the administration to find a balance between fiscal responsibility and the welfare of its citizens during this challenging period.
