ZZS explains why its deputies did not participate in the debates on Siliņa's government work
Deputies from the Greens and Farmers Union (ZZS) in Latvia did not participate in parliamentary debates regarding the work of Prime Minister Evika Siliņa, choosing instead to avoid a discussion that highlighted their contributions.
On Thursday, deputies from the Greens and Farmers Union (ZZS) in Latvia notably did not take part in the discussions in the Saeima about the government work of Prime Minister Evika Siliņa. This absence was conspicuous as no ZZS representatives were registered for the debates up until the mid-afternoon, and their names were also not listed among those potentially scheduled to speak later. Meanwhile, members from the ruling coalition party 'Jaunā Vienotība' used the debate time to praise the government's accomplishments over the past year.
ZZS faction leader Harijs Rokpelnis addressed the reasons for this absence when questioned by the LETA agency. He stated that a substantial part of the government's achievements over the past year, as well as the budget proposals for the current year, were directly attributed to ZZS efforts. This highlights a tension within the coalition where the ZZS feels their contributions may not be duly recognized in public forums like the parliamentary debates, where their absence allows other parties to take center stage.
The discussions held by 'Jaunā Vienotība' covered various accomplishments, including family support initiatives, health sector improvements, particularly the construction of an Oncology Center, and support for regional family doctors. The lack of representation from ZZS during such a critical moment raises questions about internal dynamics within the coalition government and suggests a strategic approach by ZZS to reassert their influence and stake in ongoing and upcoming governmental programs, especially concerning economic growth and initiatives that they have developed further in conjunction with the Ministry of Economics.
