The Federal Highway Police (PRF) conducted the 'Sentinela' operation in the Sertão of Pernambuco, seizing illegal wood and rescuing numerous birds over a span of several weeks.

The Federal Highway Police (PRF) have announced the results of operation 'Sentinela', focused on environmental protection in the regions of Petrolina, Salgueiro, and Serra Talhada in the Sertão of Pernambuco. From February 26 to March 15, 2026, the PRF seized a total of 210.74 m³ of illegal wood from highways traversing the area. This operation was supported by the Environmental Crimes Assault Group (GECAM) and aimed at combating deforestation and crimes against wildlife.

Throughout this period, the operation resulted in 20 recorded criminal occurrences, including the successful rescue of 137 wild birds. In addition to wildlife protection, the PRF teams actively monitored and controlled illegal emissions from vehicles, driving home the dual focus on both environmental and public safety. The proactive measures taken highlight the importance of regulatory enforcement in protecting natural resources and ecosystems in the Sertão region.

The operation also led to the detention of 12 individuals and the recovery of 42 irregular vehicles. A total of 226 infractions were documented during the enforcement, showcasing the extensive nature of the illegal activities in the area. One vehicle was even found to have been reported stolen, which illustrates the intersection of various types of crime within environmental issues, stressing the need for ongoing vigilance and action from law enforcement to protect both wildlife and community resources.
