Surprise winners triumphed at Holmenkollen, Aigro disqualified
Surprise winners emerged at the Holmenkollen ski jumping event, with Japan's Tomofumi Naito taking his first career victory, while Estonia's Aigro faced disqualification.
The recent ski jumping World Cup event held in Holmenkollen, Oslo, witnessed unexpected outcomes as Japan’s Tomofumi Naito claimed his first victory with a score of 128.7 points. He was closely followed by Slovenia’s Anže Lanišek and Finland’s Antti Aalto, who finished second and third, respectively. The competition was marked by changing wind conditions that affected the competitors’ performances, leading to the cancellation of the second round of jumps, which favored those who had jumped earlier in the event.
Naito's win is particularly significant as it marks his career's first podium finish, a notable achievement following his fourth-place finish at a previous event in Kulm and a sixth-place finish in Klingenthal last December. The 33-year-old athlete has shown a rising form in recent competitions, culminating in this victory at Holmenkollen. He managed to secure first place amidst challenging conditions that prevented several seasoned competitors from performing at their usual high standards.
Among the competitors, Finland's Aalto also achieved his first podium finish, stepping up from a fifth-place finish at Lahti just a week prior. However, not all frontrunners fared well; Domen Prevc of Slovenia, who led the qualification rounds, could only manage a ninth-place finish, reflecting the unpredictable nature of the event due to the windy conditions. This race not only highlighted the talent of emerging athletes but also illustrated the challenges faced by elite competitors in adverse weather conditions.
