Flying electric boats want to take the world by storm

Sweden's Candela is constructing twelve electric hydrofoil ferries that are more efficient and environmentally friendly than traditional options.

In a factory in Rotebro, just outside Stockholm, Candela is currently building twelve Candela P12 hydrofoil ferries, which can accommodate up to 30 passengers each. Hydrofoils are not a new concept; the technology has been around for over a century. However, it is only with today's advanced sensors, digital control systems, lightweight materials, and electric propulsion that hydrofoils have become practical and commercially viable.

During the last two summers, one of Candela's electric ferries operated on the EkerΓΆ-Stadshuset route in Stockholm. Evaluations by the region and the Transport Agency indicated that travel time could be reduced from 55 to 30 minutes, while energy consumption decreased by up to 66% and carbon emissions dropped by 94%. Overall, passenger numbers on the route increased by 22% as a result of the service.

Candela claims that using hydrofoil technology does not necessarily require a premium for environmentally friendly options, a reference to the additional cost often associated with choosing climate-friendly technologies over fossil fuel alternatives. The company remains optimistic about the future adoption of this technology as it continues to develop its fleet and improve operational efficiencies, highlighting the potential for electric boats to transform regional transportation.
