It is time to electrify ships: Spain could do it with 78% of its ferries and it is already profitable for almost half
A report from 'Transport & Environment' highlights the pollution generated by ferries compared to cars in coastal cities and advocates for increasing electric ferry systems in Spain.
The report from Transport & Environment underscores the significant environmental impact of ferries, which produce between 15 and 100 times more atmospheric pollution from sulfur oxides (SOx) than cars in coastal cities like Algeciras and Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The findings suggest this pollution is substantially higher in various locations, drawing attention to the urgent need for cleaner alternatives.
Transitioning to electric or hybrid ferry systems is not only feasible but also financially viable for approximately 78% of Spain's ferries, with a notable 46% deemed profitable under current technologies. This transition is vital as the maritime sector contributes significantly to urban air pollution, highlighting the necessity for immediate action towards electrification and decarbonization of ferry services.
To facilitate this switch, the report emphasizes the need for enhanced charging infrastructure in ports, a key element that will allow for more efficient operation of electric ferries and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Increasing electrical capacity at ports would support the growth of the electric ferry fleet and mitigate the environmental impact on coastal urban areas.
