Residents of the São Pedro neighborhood in Esmeraldas, Brazil, reported seeing a jaguar walking on rooftops early in the morning, marking the second such sighting in under a week.
Residents in the São Pedro neighborhood of Esmeraldas, located in the Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, observed a jaguar walking on the rooftops of houses on the morning of Monday, October 16. This incident was captured on video and drew significant attention from local passersby. This marked the second instance of a jaguar sighting in the area within a week, highlighting growing concerns about wildlife interactions in urban settings.
The sighting occurred just before 6 AM on Rua Três Marias, and witnesses reported that the jaguar was seen jumping from rooftop to rooftop. Following the reports, the local fire department and the Environmental Military Police were alerted around 5:50 AM, and they conducted searches in the vicinity but were unable to locate the animal. Authorities advised residents to contact them again if the jaguar appeared again, emphasizing the importance of both monitoring and addressing wildlife in populated areas.
Environmental analyst Junio Augusto from the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) commented on the jaguar's condition, stating that it appears to be an underage or subadult animal nearing adulthood, weighing approximately 30 to 35 kilograms. This encounter raises awareness about the habitat and behaviors of such wildlife in urban regions and highlights the need for public safety measures and wildlife management strategies in increasingly developed areas of Brazil.
