Jaguar spotted roaming the streets of Greater BH at night; see video
A jaguar was seen roaming through the residential streets of Esmeraldas, a suburb of Belo Horizonte, as captured by security cameras.
A jaguar was spotted strolling through the residential areas in Esmeraldas, located in the Greater Belo Horizonte region, during the night. Footage from security cameras shows the jaguar calmly walking along the sidewalk and at one point, it was observed climbing a street before jumping into a property. While residents reported the sighting to the Fire Brigade, no trace of the animal was found afterwards.
Environmental analyst JΓΊnior Augusto from the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) noted that such sightings in this area are not uncommon due to the abundant vegetation surrounding farms and properties, which serve as ecological corridors for wildlife to venture into urban settings. He reassured the public that the presence of these animals, although alarming, can happen in regions where they are typically adapted to live.
Residents are advised to promptly call the fire department should they encounter wildlife in their neighborhoods. This incident highlights the ongoing interplay between urban development and wildlife habitats, raising awareness of the need for coexistence strategies to mitigate human-animal conflicts in suburban areas.
