FG pledges to strengthen cybersecurity, protect Nigerians’ digital rights

The Nigerian Federal Government is committed to enhancing cybersecurity and safeguarding the digital rights of its citizens through the development of various policy frameworks.

In a recent announcement, the Nigerian Federal Government emphasized its dedication to protecting the digital rights and privacy of Nigerians. This commitment is underpinned by the creation of comprehensive policy and regulatory frameworks aimed at bolstering cybersecurity across the nation. Dr. Ayodele Bakare, Assistant Director of the Cybersecurity Department at the National Information Technology Development Agency, highlighted these efforts during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja.

Dr. Bakare elaborated on the collaborative approach being adopted for cybersecurity governance in Nigeria, which involves multiple government agencies with distinct responsibilities. The coordination of these national cybersecurity initiatives falls under the purview of the Office of the National Security Adviser, which oversees operations through the National Cybersecurity Coordination Centre. This structure is designed to ensure a cohesive response to cybersecurity threats, bringing together various stakeholders in the public sector to enhance the overall security of Nigeria’s digital landscape.

The focus on cybersecurity is particularly significant given the increasing threats faced in the digital environment today. By solidifying its cybersecurity strategies, the government aims not only to protect its citizens' digital rights but also to foster trust in the government's ability to safeguard personal and sensitive information. As these frameworks are implemented, they are expected to address existing gaps in cybersecurity measures and respond effectively to emerging challenges in Nigeria’s rapidly evolving digital era.
