FG vows continuous security presence to stem school attacks
The Nigerian Federal Government is strengthening the Safe Schools Initiative in collaboration with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to protect educational institutions from attacks.
The Nigerian government has announced a significant initiative to enhance the security of schools across the nation as part of its Safe Schools Initiative. This move comes in response to rising concerns about school attacks, prompting the Federal Government to partner with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa emphasized the need for a proactive rather than reactive approach to school security, stating that continuous security presence will be established, especially in schools deemed vulnerable.
During his visit to the NSCDC Commandant-General, Alausa highlighted plans for sustainable financing to ensure that security measures are fully funded. A crucial aspect of this initiative is the establishment of a dedicated Safe Schools department within the Ministry of Education to oversee the implementation of safety protocols and to enhance collaboration with the NSCDC. This department will play a critical role in addressing and preventing school attacks while ensuring that the administration's commitment to safeguarding children's education is upheld.
In addition to physical security measures, the government plans to incorporate technology-driven systems to bolster safety in schools. These include the introduction of panic buttons linked to command centres, which will enable quick responses in the event of emergencies. This comprehensive approach not only aims to create a more secure learning environment but also reflects the administration's dedication to protecting students, reinforcing the idea that education should be a safe experience for all children in Nigeria.
