Election Commission to Break the Cycle of Irregularities in Bengal Elections

The Election Commission aims to ensure fair elections in West Bengal by implementing live broadcasting of voting and deploying extensive security forces for the upcoming election phases.

The state of West Bengal is set to conduct its elections in a novel format where voting will take place over two phases for the first time. This initiative includes live broadcast of the voting process at all booths, a new measure introduced under the Election Commission’s webcasting initiative. To facilitate these reforms and maintain order, significant security measures have been put in place, with around 480 companies of security personnel being deployed, amounting to nearly 150,000 to 200,000 officers stationed across the state to tackle potential unrest ahead of the first phase of voting.

Historically, West Bengal has seen a persistent trend of political violence, with no recent elections being completed without incidents of aggression. Since the 1970s, the presence of political turmoil has plagued electoral processes, making it crucial for the Election Commission to execute measures ensuring violence-free elections. However, the commission has faced criticism, especially from opposition leader Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress, regarding previous electoral conducts. Accordingly, this time around, the commission is making extensive efforts to fend off political violence by implementing rigorous security protocols and oversight.

To reinforce these initiatives, the Election Commission has not only orchestrated security arrangements but has also directed agencies like the Income Tax Department and Enforcement Directorate to monitor for any irregular political activities. This holistic approach aims to ensure that all political parties operate within the set electoral frameworks, thus promoting transparency and stability during the electoral process in West Bengal.
