Before the elections, CM Mamata receives a jolt, EC transfers Bengal's DGP and Kolkata's Police Commissioner

The Election Commission of India has transferred several key officials in West Bengal, including the DGP and Kolkata Police Commissioner, to ensure fair elections amid the implementation of the Model Code of Conduct.

The Election Commission of India has taken stringent measures in West Bengal ahead of the upcoming elections, implementing the Model Code of Conduct. This action includes immediate transfers of several high-ranking officials associated with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, specifically the Director General of Police (DGP) and the Police Commissioner of Kolkata. The Commission's intent is to ensure that elections in the state are conducted in a fair and peaceful manner, minimizing any potential biases that could arise from the presence of officials close to the incumbent government.

As part of these changes, Siddh Nath Gupta has been appointed as the new acting DGP and IGP, while Ajay Kumar Nand has been designated as the new Police Commissioner of Kolkata. Additionally, there have been other administrative changes, including the appointment of Ajay Mukund Ranade as ADG for law and order and Natarajan Ramesh Babu as the DG of correctional services. This significant reshuffle reflects the Election Commission's commitment to maintaining the integrity of the electoral process.

The changes extend beyond the police department, affecting administrative positions as well. The Chief Secretary of the state, Nandini Chakraborty, has been removed from her post and replaced by Dushyant Nariyala. Furthermore, Sanghamitra Ghosh has been appointed as the Principal Secretary for Himalayan Affairs. Such extensive personnel changes aim to curb any undue influence during the elections and to ensure that the process remains transparent and credible.
