Facial biometrics begin to be used at Fernando de Noronha airport

Facial biometrics are now being implemented at Fernando de Noronha airport to modernize immigration control and improve access to public services.

The facial biometrics system has been introduced at the airport in Fernando de Noronha, which requires passengers to download the "Noronha in the Palm of Your Hand" application, developed by the University of Pernambuco in collaboration with the local island administration. This digital tool aims to modernize immigration control and expand access to public services on the island.

Initially, the system is being used with public servers and residents, with biometric gates installed in the new disembarkation area of the airport. The testing phase commenced on March 7 and will last for up to 60 days, allowing residents and service providers to adjust to the new migration control model. The objective is to centralize the registration of entry and exit, ensuring a smoother process for managing both locals and visitors.

After the testing phase, the application is expected to be made available to tourists as well, marking a significant step toward integrating modern technology into the island's administrative functions. This move highlights the local government's efforts to enhance the efficiency of services in a popular tourist destination and reflects broader trends in using technology to improve public service delivery in remote areas.
