After half a century pause, a new music textbook reaches high schools
A charity foundation is gifting a new comprehensive music history textbook to all high schools in Estonia, covering music life from the 12th and 13th centuries up to Estonia's declaration of independence in 1918.
The charity foundation 'Aitan Lapsi' has announced its initiative to donate the first volume of the overview work 'Eesti muusikalugu' (Estonian Music History) to all 154 high schools in Estonia. This textbook aims to engage students in the rich tapestry of music life in Estonia, providing insights into the evolution of music from the medieval period right through to the early 20th century. The comprehensive nature of the book makes it a significant educational resource that has been long awaited in the Estonian educational landscape.
This initiative arrives after a hiatus of fifty years during which high schools have lacked an updated and collected resource on Estonian music history. By gifting this textbook, the foundation hopes to not only enhance the curriculum but also encourage a deeper appreciation for Estonia's musical heritage among the youth. The book covers key periods and figures in Estonian music, ensuring that students have access to a structured understanding of their cultural history.
The importance of this donation goes beyond just the educational aspect; it is a statement about the value placed on cultural education by the Estonian society. By reintroducing such an essential subject into the classroom, it reinforces the importance of music as a key component of national identity and pride. As Estonian culture continues to evolve, embracing its musical history will pave the way for future generations to connect with their roots and artistic expressions.
