Seven dead in Nepal horror as bus topples over mountain after slipping off road
A bus accident in Nepal resulted in seven deaths and nine injuries as it fell off a mountain road while returning pilgrims to Kathmandu.
On Saturday, a tragic bus accident occurred in Nepal, claiming the lives of seven individuals and injuring nine others. The bus, which was transporting over a dozen Indian pilgrims, was descending a mountain road near Shahid Lakhan village—approximately 75 miles west of Kathmandu—when it veered off the road and plummeted around 500 feet into a ravine. The vehicle was returning from the revered Manakamana Temple, a significant site for Hindu devotees who believe in the goddess's blessings if they visit the shrine.
The local authorities, specifically the Gorkha District Police, reported that among the deceased are five men and two women, with the victims ranging in age from 53 to 60 years old. The identification of the deceased has been confirmed as Tamilarsi, Meenakshi, Muthu Kumar, Anamalik, Meena, Vijayal, and Sivagami. In addition to those who lost their lives, nine others sustained injuries in this unfortunate incident, which included seven Indian pilgrims alongside the bus driver and his assistant.
This devastating accident highlights ongoing safety concerns regarding mountainous travel in Nepal, particularly with vehicles navigating treacherous roads with sharp curves. It reiterates the need for improved road safety, adherence to traffic regulations, and better support for pilgrims visiting popular religious sites. The loss of life in this incident has not only affected the families of the victims but also raises broader concerns for the Nepalese tourism industry, which often relies on such pilgrimages as a vital source of revenue.
