LVRA President Kalniņš: Tourists are in the region, but their choice is increasingly not Riga

The President of the Latvian Hotel and Restaurant Association reports a decrease in foreign tourist numbers in Latvia, with more travelers opting for alternative destinations over Riga.

Andris Kalniņš, the President of the Latvian Hotel and Restaurant Association (LVRA), highlighted a significant downturn in the hospitality sector at the start of this year compared to the same period last year. According to data provided by association members, the number of foreign visitors in Latvia during the first two months of 2026 was lower than in the corresponding period the previous year. This trend is reflected in the passenger flow at Riga Airport, where statistics showed no positive momentum in January and February, while airports in neighboring countries experienced an increase in passenger numbers.

Kalniņš emphasized that while tourists are still visiting the region, they are increasingly choosing other destinations over Riga. This shift indicates a growing competition in the tourism sector, causing concern for the local hospitality industry. The LVRA President noted that January and February are historically slow months for the hospitality sector, which challenges cities and countries looking to promote tourism during these periods.

To counter the effects of the lull, Kalniņš urged cities and nations focused on tourism development to strategically attract large international events such as conferences, sports competitions, or festivals that can help fill hotels even in off-peak seasons. This proactive approach could significantly enhance Latvia's appeal as a tourist destination and support the hospitality sector during traditionally slower periods.
