Liberia: LDEA Seizes Drugs Worth L$7.77 Million At Ganta Border - Guinean National Arrested
The Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency arrested a Guinean national and seized narcotics worth over L$7.7 million at the Ganta border.
The Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) reported the arrest of a 47-year-old Guinean national, Mohamed Sheriff, at the Ganta Port of Entry in Nimba County on March 14, 2026. The arrest occurred during a routine security operation conducted by the LDEA in collaboration with Joint Security forces. Sheriff was attempting to cross the border when officers discovered 259 packs of Tramadol, a controlled substance often abused as a narcotic. The total estimated street value of the drugs was L$7,770,000, or approximately US$40,809, indicating the significant scale of this illicit drug trafficking incident.
The successful operation by the LDEA underscores the continued efforts to combat drug trafficking in Liberia, particularly at border entry points. The Ganta border, being a critical transit point, has seen increased scrutiny from law enforcement, leading to various arrests linked to drug smuggling. With this latest seizure, authorities are signaling their commitment to tackling the drug crisis and enhancing border security to prevent the influx of illicit substances into the country.
In addition to the narcotics, the authorities also confiscated 700,000 Guinean francs, which is indicative of monetary transactions often associated with drug trafficking operations. As Liberia deals with its own challenges related to drug abuse and trafficking, this incident highlights the need for concerted efforts between law enforcement and community awareness programs to address the root causes of drug abuse, emphasizing preventive strategies alongside enforcement efforts.
