Haitians in Viracopos: understand what refuge, humanitarian reception is, and the different entry points into Brazil
A group of 118 Haitians was detained for over 55 hours at Viracopos Airport in Brazil before beginning their humanitarian admission process.
On Thursday (12), a group of 118 Haitian passengers was held by the Federal Police for ten hours on an aircraft at Viracopos Airport in Brazil. This delay occurred before they were transferred to a designated room for the continuation of their admission process into the country. The lengthy detention spanned over 55 hours until they finally received humanitarian visas and registered asylum requests, allowing them to be fully released on Saturday (14).
Following their release, most of the Haitians expressed intentions to move on to other locations in Brazil, where they have friends or family. They were later transported to the Campinas bus station where they purchased tickets for their further travel. This highlights the movement of Haitian immigrants within the country as they seek reunification with their loved ones.
Eight individuals from the group required additional assistance and remained under the care of social services from the Campinas City Hall. Of these, five continued their travels on Sunday (15), while three remained under care, indicating ongoing challenges faced by migrants navigating the Brazilian immigration system and the importance of support mechanisms in place for their integration and welfare in the new environment.
