Parking attendants are taken to the police station for irregular activity in the South Zone of Rio

Ten informal parking attendants were apprehended by police in Rio de Janeiro for charging drivers fees to park in public areas during a recent operation sparked by community complaints.

In a recent operation conducted by the Segurança Presente program in Rio de Janeiro, ten informal parking attendants, referred to locally as 'flanelinhas', were taken to the 9th Police Station in Catete for conducting illegal activities in the Aterro do Flamengo area. This intervention was initiated following multiple reports from residents and visitors who claimed that these individuals were demanding parking fees ranging from R$ 30 to R$ 100, causing a sense of intimidation and insecurity among drivers looking for legitimate parking spots.

The operation highlighted critical issues surrounding informal parking services, as many drivers expressed concern over being forced to park in unauthorized areas. Three of the individuals apprehended were found wearing vests that indicated a form of authorization, but the police identified discrepancies as these individuals did not match the registered attendants. Upon arriving at the police station, the authorities uncovered that some of the apprehended individuals had criminal records related to theft, bodily injury, and other offenses, raising significant public safety concerns.

Despite the serious nature of the situation, all ten parking attendants were released and will respond to their charges in freedom. This incident not only reinforces the ongoing struggle with informal parking schemes in Rio but also underscores the broader implications of safety and regulation in urban environments where residents and visitors expect secure public spaces.
