Ukraine plans anti-drone protection for 600 kilometers of front-line roads
Ukraine is set to install anti-drone protective netting along 600 kilometers of front-line roads crucial for military logistics and medical evacuations, as announced by Deputy Prime Minister Oleksii Kuleba.
On March 15, Deputy Prime Minister Oleksii Kuleba announced Ukraine's initiative to implement anti-drone protective netting along approximately 600 kilometers (373 miles) of front-line roads. These roads are critical for military logistics, enabling supplies to reach Ukrainian forces and facilitating the medical evacuation of injured soldiers. This project is a response to the ongoing conflict, where drones have become a significant method of warfare employed by Russian forces, targeting logistics and personnel in military operations.
The execution of this initiative will be a collaborative effort involving the Infrastructure Ministry, the Defense Ministry, and the Health Ministry, which have collectively determined priority areas that necessitate enhanced protection. Kuleba indicated that the financial requirement for this protection scheme amounts to over 12.8 billion hryvnias, roughly $300 million. The government is currently exploring a financing mechanism partnership with the Defense Ministry to support this substantial investment in military infrastructure.
Currently, some vulnerable roads near the conflict frontlines are already equipped with anti-drone netting, which is installed as overhead protection along key supply routes that are frequently targeted by drone attacks. This proactive measure is intended to intercept or deflect incoming drones before they can harm vehicles or personnel, thereby safeguarding critical military operations and contributing to overall combat readiness.
