The Akwa Ibom State Police Command announced the arrest of four individuals suspected of vandalizing facilities of Seplat Energy in the Ibeno Local Government Area. The police were alerted by the Security Control Room of Seplat Energy about a group of youths, allegedly led by a leader, who attempted to vandalize the company’s property, including its signpost. The distress call was made around noon on March 11, prompting an immediate police response.
Upon arriving at the scene, the police discovered that the group had already forcefully pulled down and damaged the company’s signpost, and that they had intentions to gain access to the facility in order to further destroy critical installations. The operation was directed by the Commissioner of Police for the Akwa Ibom Command, Baba Azare, who emphasized the urgency of addressing such vandalism, which poses risks not only to company operations but also to the community's safety and environment.
The incident underscores ongoing tensions in the region concerning oil facilities, where illegal activities have been prevalent. The ability of law enforcement to respond rapidly is crucial in maintaining order and protecting investments in the area, especially as it relates to local employment and economic stability linked to the oil sector. The authorities are likely to pursue further investigations to determine if there are organized groups behind the vandalism, providing a thorough understanding of the broader implications for security in Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria’s oil industry.
