PT 'hopes' for Kim's candidacy for the Government of SP to enable a second round

The Brazilian Workers' Party (PT) is discreetly supporting Kim Kataguiri's candidacy for the São Paulo government, seeing it as a chance to ensure a second round in the elections against Tarcísio de Freitas and Fernando Haddad.

Leaders of Brazil’s Workers' Party (PT) have begun to subtly support Kim Kataguiri's candidacy for the São Paulo state government. The party's strategy centers around the hope that Kataguiri, who recently founded his party, the Movement Brasil Livre (MBL), could secure enough votes to force a second-round election against current candidates Tarcísio de Freitas of the Republicans and Fernando Haddad of the PT. According to a Datafolha poll released on March 8, Kataguiri has garnered 5% of voter intentions while Freitas leads at 44% and Haddad trails at 31%.

In addition to Kataguiri, other potential candidates such as Paulo Serra from the PSDB and Felipe D’Avila from Novo are expected to withdraw their candidacies, aligning their parties to support Freitas's re-election. This scenario positions Kataguiri as the only significant third-party candidate who could disrupt the typical binary election outcomes. The implications of his candidacy extend beyond local politics; a robust second-round campaign in São Paulo could bolster the chances for the PT in the upcoming presidential elections, particularly against Flávio Bolsonaro from the Liberal Party (PL).

Kim Kataguiri himself has responded to the growing support by expressing his flattery in light of the PT's interest in his candidacy. This development highlights not only the dynamics within the state government race but also the broader political strategy at play as the PT seeks to strengthen its position on the national stage through alliances and electoral tactics, particularly as the presidential elections approach.
