PT formalizes preliminary candidacies for the government of the Federal District and the Senate
The Workers' Party (PT) has officially announced its preliminary candidates for the government of the Federal District and the Senate ahead of the upcoming elections.
The Workers' Party (PT) has officially registered its preliminary candidates for the upcoming elections in the Federal District of Brazil. The candidates put forward are Leandro Grass, the president of Iphan, for the position of governor, and Érika Kokay, a federal deputy, alongside incumbent Leila Barros (PDT) for the Senate. This decision will be presented to the Brazil Hope Federation, which consists of PT, PV, and PCdoB, for joint approval at both local and national levels.
As residents of the Federal District gear up to vote in 2026 for a new governor, the political landscape is becoming increasingly competitive. With the current governor Ibaneis Rocha (MDB) completing two terms, the seat at the Palácio do Buriti is open for a new candidate. A survey by g1 indicates that at least four politicians have already declared their intention to run for the governorship in 2026, including Celina Leão (PP), the current vice-governor, former governor José Roberto Arruda (PSD), district deputy Paula Belmonte (Cidadania), and Ricardo Cappelli (PSB), who has been acting as the federal intervention in the DF’s security following the events of January 8.
The upcoming elections represent a pivotal moment for political dynamics in the Federal District, given the shift in leadership and the variety of candidates stepping forward. With the PT entering the race with notable candidates, there is keen interest in how these selections might influence the electoral strategies of competing parties, and the overall political balance in the region as new faces vie for key positions in the government and Senate.
