The Election Commission announced the assembly elections in five Indian states, with voting periods spread over 20 days.

The Election Commission of India has officially announced the assembly election dates for five states: Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal. Notably, four of these states will conduct elections in a single phase, while West Bengal will have elections in two phases. Despite the staggered voting timelines, the results for all five states will be declared simultaneously on May 4th, following the last voting date of April 29th. With the first voting date set for April 9th, the electoral fortunes of these states will be determined in a swift 20-day window.

In terms of voter participation, approximately 17.4 crore (174 million) voters are eligible to cast their ballots to elect a total of 824 Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) across these states. As for the current political landscape, Kerala has 140 assembly seats with a majority threshold of 71, currently governed by the Left Front. Assam, on the other hand, has 126 assembly seats and a majority figure of 64, with the BJP in power and Himanta Biswa Sarma serving as the Chief Minister. Both states will hold voting on April 9th, and the outcomes could signal significant shifts in their political dynamics.

As the elections approach, the political stakes are high, with the incumbent governments eager to retain their power and the opposition parties aiming for a resurgence. These elections are crucial not just for state governance but also for shaping the political landscape ahead of larger national polls in the future. Voter turnout and engagement in these elections will be pivotal, as they can reflect the public's mood and priorities leading into the next phase of electoral contests in India.
