Education Minister: Some teacher recruitment measures could be implemented as early as September

Lithuania's education minister announced that a plan to attract and retain teachers will undergo discussions with stakeholders, with some measures potentially starting this September.

The Lithuanian Education Minister revealed a newly proposed plan aimed at attracting and retaining teachers, which is currently open for discussion for two weeks. The minister emphasized the importance of these discussions for refining the plan, indicating that the government is eager to start implementing aspects of the plan. While some measures are scheduled for later implementation, others are designed to be initiated this September, aiming for quick action that is both financially feasible and uncomplicated to execute.

The Ministry of Education and Science (ŠMSM) presented this plan, which includes strategies for improving working conditions for teachers as well as fostering a supportive environment for social partners and unions in the education sector. By seeking additional proposals from interested groups until March 20, the ministry aims to ensure that the plan is comprehensive and inclusive. The details of the plan suggest a collaborative approach to addressing the challenges of teacher recruitment and retention in Lithuania’s educational landscape.

Looking ahead to the 2026-2028 period, the plan outlines a dual focus; it aims not only to attract new teachers into the profession but also to enhance existing teachers' work conditions, thereby encouraging them to remain in the education system. This proactive strategy is seen as a critical step to strengthen the nation's educational framework and improve overall educational outcomes, reflecting the government's recognition of the need for systemic changes in teacher management and support.
