Woo Sang-ho, Democratic Governor Candidate for Gangwon, "I respect the decision to build a new Gangwon Provincial Office"

Woo Sang-ho, a Democratic candidate for the Gangwon governorship, expressed respect for the decision to build a new provincial office, while raising concerns about financing through apartment sales.

Woo Sang-ho, a preliminary candidate for the governorship of Gangwon from the Democratic Party, held a press conference on the 15th to discuss the contentious issue of relocating and constructing a new provincial office in Gangwon. He affirmed his respect for the decision to build the new office after administrative procedures were completed on June 6, stating that it is essential to uphold administrative trust and avoid unnecessary lawsuits and confusion. However, he urged the suspension of the groundbreaking ceremony due to concerns over financing the construction costs through profits from apartment sales.

During the press conference, Woo criticized the reliance on revenue from apartment sales as a means to fund the construction, calling it a "dangerous gamble" that puts residents at risk. He argued that relying on these profits ignores the reality of the market, highlighting that there are already 22,660 housing units under development in Chuncheon, and that it would be nearly impossible to secure adequate funding through an additional 4,700 units. He warned that if the sale were to fail, it could burden the residents with debts ranging from hundreds of millions to possibly up to 1.4 trillion Korean Won.

As the current governor, Kim Jin-tae, announced plans for a groundbreaking ceremony for the new office on the 30th, Woo described the intention to proceed with the ceremony before necessary groundwork such as selecting a construction company and submitting a construction plan as a deceptive political show. He pledged to develop a safe and reasonable financing plan for the construction if elected, aiming to prioritize the residents' best interests during this contentious debate about local government resources.
