Skier Rescued by Helicopter After Drama on the Bottenviken Sea Ice
Two skiers were successfully rescued by a helicopter after a challenging search operation on Bottenviken sea ice.
On Saturday morning at around 7 AM, an emergency call was made to the Rescue Coordination Center in Turku regarding two individuals stranded on the sea ice of Bottenviken. However, locating the individuals proved to be a significant challenge, as their exact position could not be determined despite activating an emergency beacon that alerted Finnish helicopters and air support.
The Swedish Maritime Administration was subsequently involved, leading to the deployment of a Search and Rescue (SAR) helicopter from Umeå, along with two Swedish JAS planes that assisted in the search efforts. Additionally, the icebreaker Oden was contacted to provide detailed information on the current ice conditions, which were crucial for the safety of the rescue operation.
After hours of searching and initially failing to locate the skiers, a new position was received from the emergency transmitter. At 10:30 AM, a Finnish helicopter managed to find and rescue the stranded individuals, who had cleverly arranged ice blocks to form the letters 'SOS' to increase their chances of being found.
