Skaters trapped on ice floe outside Söderhamn - rescued by helicopter
Three skaters were rescued by helicopter after becoming trapped on an ice floe near Söderhamn, Sweden.
A dramatic rescue operation unfolded outside Söderhamn, Sweden, after three individuals found themselves stranded on an ice floe. The alarm was raised around 12:30 PM when the skaters were reported standing on a single, nearby ice floe that later split apart. Rescue services faced immediate challenges as they were unable to deploy boats due to the hazardous ice conditions, which prompted the dispatch of a helicopter for the rescue operation.
Rescue leader Dan Berg described the situation as precarious, emphasizing that the safety of the skaters was paramount. Before attempting to rescue the individuals via helicopter, surface rescuers were dispatched to assist in case any of the skaters fell into the frigid waters below. After nearly a three-kilometer sprint across the ice, the rescuers arrived on the scene, relieved to confirm that none of the skaters had entered the water, making the conditions more manageable than initially feared.
By around 2 PM, the skaters were successfully brought to safety and would subsequently be assessed by emergency medical personnel. This incident not only highlighted the risks associated with winter sports but also the importance of swift and coordinated rescue efforts in emergency situations where traditional means of rescue are hindered.
