Skiers Rescued from the Sea โ Wrote SOS with Ice
Two skiers who got stranded on a floating ice slab were rescued after signaling for help by arranging ice blocks into the shape of 'SOS'.
Two men embarked on an extensive ski tour on the frozen Bottenviken, stretching from Oulu in Finland to Luleรฅ in Sweden, a journey over 160 kilometers. Their expedition took a dangerous turn when the ice they were on gave way, causing their equipment to fall into the sea and leaving them unable to make progress. After a dire night spent in a tent and the activation of an emergency beacon, initial rescue efforts involving helicopters from both Finland and Sweden failed to locate them.
Despite these efforts, the skiers were not found until they managed to reposition their emergency beacon the following morning around 10:30 AM. Thankfully, they had also ingeniously arranged blocks of ice to form a large 'SOS' signal on the ice slab. This distress signal proved crucial, as it finally led to their rescue by a Finnish helicopter that spotted them thanks to their creative signaling method. This situation highlights the potential dangers of winter sports in remote areas and underscores the importance of having effective communication and emergency measures during outdoor expeditions.
The experience not only serves as a reminder of the risks associated with skiing on natural ice but also exemplifies human ingenuity and resilience in critical situations. The quick thinking of the skiers in crafting a visible signal potentially saved their lives, showcasing the need for proper gear and preparation when undertaking such adventures across challenging terrains.
