Casa de Santos Dumont will have free admission on the anniversary of Petrópolis; see what opens and closes on the holiday
Petrópolis celebrates its 183rd anniversary with free entry to the Casa de Santos Dumont museum for residents.
Petrópolis, a city in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro, is celebrating its 183rd anniversary on Monday, October 16. To commemorate this significant date, the Casa de Santos Dumont, one of the city's main tourist attractions, will offer free admission for local residents as part of the municipal holiday festivities. The museum is usually closed on Mondays for cleaning and maintenance, but will exceptionally open from 10 AM to 5 PM during the anniversary celebration. Residents will need to present proof of residence to take advantage of this complimentary offering.
The Casa de Santos Dumont holds historical value as the former residence of Alberto Santos Dumont, a prominent Brazilian inventor and aviation pioneer known as the Father of Aviation. The house, often referred to as “A Encantada,” was constructed in 1918 on a steep hillside and is notable for its unique architectural design and innovative features envisioned by Santos Dumont himself. One of its distinguishing characteristics is the exterior staircase with steps shaped like rackets, highlighting the inventor's creative problem-solving skills.
This initiative not only allows locals to engage more with their heritage but also raises awareness about the city's history and notable figures. As Petrópolis celebrates its founding, the free admission serves as an opportunity for residents to appreciate the cultural significance of the Casa de Santos Dumont, fostering a deeper connection to the legacy of one of Brazil's most celebrated inventors and attracting more visitors to the area during the holiday festivities.
