Awoyinfa Opeoluwa, a former student leader, has announced his candidacy for the presidency of the National Association of Nigerian Students, championing student rights and welfare.
Awoyinfa Opeoluwa, a former Public Relations Officer of NANS Zone D and a notable student union leader from the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), has officially declared his intention to run for the presidency of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS). His announcement came in the form of a manifesto presented to student leaders and media representatives, asserting a commitment to promote the rights and welfare of Nigerian students. Awoyinfa's candidacy is driven by a passion for advocating on behalf of students, emphasizing that he not only seeks a position of power but aims to be a voice for the student community.
Awoyinfa will contest the presidency under the IMPACT movement, which prides itself on the slogan “Vox Populi Vox Dei”, translating to “The Voice of the People is the Voice of God.” This slogan encapsulates his campaign’s philosophy of prioritizing student input and ensuring their voices are considered within critical decision-making processes affecting their lives and education. He has also outlined a leadership approach that focuses on collaboration with student unions across various institutions, highlighting the importance of a united front in addressing students' issues nationwide.
The NANS presidency is a significant student leadership role in Nigeria, representing millions of students across the country. Awoyinfa's ambitions come at a time when student welfare issues are critical, particularly in light of recent challenges facing the educational sector. His leadership vision could potentially set a new tone for unionism among Nigerian students, fostering increased participation and advocacy in important social and political issues affecting the youth and wider community.
