Agege LG boss Obasa elected YELO W’Africa president

Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, the Chairman of Agege Local Government Area in Nigeria, has been elected as the President of the Young Elected Local Officials Network in West Africa.

Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, who serves as the Chairman of Agege Local Government Area, has been elected President of the West African branch of the Young Elected Local Officials Network (YELO) under the umbrella of United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLG Africa). YELO is focused on elevating the representation of young local elected officials, particularly those under 35, within subnational and municipal governments across the continent. This election signifies a notable achievement both for Obasa and for the Agege Local Government team.

UCLG Africa is an influential pan-African organization that unites local and regional governments from across the continent, having been founded in 2005 through the cooperation of various regional local government associations. It encompasses 51 national associations and over 2,000 cities and territories, thereby representing a significant demographic of more than 350 million African citizens. The organization's mission revolves around strengthening local governance structures, promoting decentralization, and empowering local authorities to better cater to the needs of their communities.

The establishment of YELO reflects a growing recognition of the importance of youth engagement in governance at the local level. By providing a platform for young leaders to voice their perspectives and actively participate in decision-making processes, UCLG Africa aims to foster a generation of informed and capable young officials who can effectively influence policy and champion the interests of their constituents. Obasa's new role as president is expected to further these goals, encouraging increased participation by young leaders in local governance throughout West Africa.
